Should You Target Website Owners For Your Audio Narration Services?

For Spotify the path for audio product dominance has again expanded. Spotify used to only offer music then branched out into podcasts. Their latest foray is into audiobooks. They are a good example of how audio is enveloping mass media.

Also, there are also now websites like CNN who prominently have both audio and video content. Another is zetland.dk where the website articles can be read or listened to. Note: Please Google translate the website so you can understand it better if you are an English language speaker.

And why are these websites including audio and even video in their websites? It’s because their users demand it. If you must know, next to the Google Search Engine, YouTube is the second most visited site online. This is because people enjoy watching and listening to video.

According to siteefy, a website services company: As of January 2020, there are 1,295,973,827 websites of which 189,000,000 are active. Just imagine if all of them started offering podcasts and other audio services: the world will be deluged with audio!

WHAT AUDIO NARRATION SERVICE IS IT THAT I’M REFERRING TO AND WHO CAN OFFFER IT?

Simply put, the audio service that I’m referring is something like this: You read the text content of a website like an article, news, story and then record it. You create/edit the audio file and send it to website owner who would then pay you for your work.

The website owner would then embed the audio file in one of the menu buttons of their website which is usually near the text article it is supposed to be narrating. When a website clicks on this button, the audio file you created will play.

This might seem easy but in reality this is very difficult. For one, not everyone is gifted with a good voice perfectly meant for digital media. This is the reason why not everyone can be a voice talent unless they are selling their own audio product.

It also requires that the voice talent must be very good in the language they’re selling. For example, an American would be superior to an Indian when it comes to saying English words. The difference in diction and knowledge of slang is vastly different for both.

You also need to be good in online digital sales. This is because you’re targeting website owners where your only means of contacting them would be via their website’s telephone and e-mail and these website owners are already jaded with online sales pitches.

WHY WOULD THIS SERVICE BOOM?

As has been said already, websites are now starting to compete with the more popular media formats which is audio and video. In essence, websites are competing with the likes of YouTube, TikTok, Television, Radio and the likes which are more immersive.

This is because more people prefer watching videos as compared to reading. This is proven by YouTube which is second only to Google’s Search Engine. Even Facebook which ranks third also contain videos and audios besides text.

But people are not only immersed with videos. They are also immersed with audios as proven by audiobooks. This is because audiobooks allow people to do something else while listening which is something they can’t do with reading a book for example.

Next came podcasts. Once digital content creators realized that there was a market for audiobooks they also realized that they don’t have to create audiobooks to sell audio. They can just basically record whatever it is that they’re speaking/talking about and podcast was born.

After podcasts became very marketable, online digital content creators started to realize that there were vast amounts of text just sitting online waiting to be turned to audio. There is now a push to convert websites to full fledged multimedia products containing text, audio and video.

WHAT ARE THE INVESTMENTS NEEDED?

Microphone: Or just about any material that can record sound. It is advisable that you buy a microphone from a real audio/music shop so you can test its compatibility with your voice.

Sound or Audio Editing Software and Hardware: Your Laptop, Tablet and even your Mobile Phone can be used as a sound/audio editing hardware. There are plenty of free and paid sound/audio editing softwares to choose from online.

Soundproofing: If you really want the best audio quality for your voice recording, you definitely need soundproofing. A day’s worth of audio recording can be ruined entirely by even a short noise from your neighbor’s shouting, a dog barking and other related noise.

Sometimes, your customer might require that you have Background Music/Audio playing while you record your speaking or narration. There are plenty of websites out there that offer non-copyrighted background music/audio. You can also create them yourself.

You may also be asked to narrate a text story which would require the use of Sound Effects to be more engrossing to the listener. There are also plenty of websites out there that offer non-copyrighted sound effects audio. You can also create them yourself.

WHY SHOULD YOU CONSIDER THIS IF YOU’RE ALREADY SELLING AUDIO PRODUCTS AND/OR SERVICES?

Extra Stream Of Income: A lot of people do need another source of income these days and if you have the so called “Voice For Radio as some people in the industry like to say it, then why not?

Podcasting And Audiobook Narration Is Already Very Competitive: A lot of people already want to break into this two industries that there are virtually several thousands of applicants for any given podcasting or audiobook narration job.

As already said, there are over a billion websites and several hundred millions of them are active. The sheer number of possible website owner customers can be very profitable even if you only managed to obtain a small number of these website owners as customers.

Again due to the sheer numbers of websites online, the Opportunity for Regular Work is very promising and may even be inexhaustible considering that hundreds of millions of websites are active.

If you managed to find audio work in a prominent website like for example CNN, you could Attain Recognition and even Fame. The sheer number of prominent websites online can add greatly to the odds of your visibility.

WHAT KIND OF AUDIENCE/CUSTOMER DOES IT SATISFY?

We’ve already established that there is a need for audio products like podcasts and audiobooks, but is there really a big market for audio services that narrates website text content?

There is. For one, Zetland, the previously mentioned website which offered both text and audio versions of their website articles conducted a survey in which they asked their customers what they wanted added on their website and the most frequent response was audio of their articles.

This is the reason why they now added audio versions of their articles when in the beginning they only offered text versions of their articles. Another thing to consider too is that not everyone can watch videos all the time.

A lot of people are busy these days and watching videos are a big drain in their time. Besides, the most important digital content are still to be found in websites and not in sites like YouTube.

Just ask yourself, which media format do you use most for entertainment? It’s video right? And which media format do you use to seriously study and learn? It’s still text media right? Well, audio media is in between these two formats and is a tradeoff of both.

SHOULD YOU SETUP YOUR OWN WEBSITE CONTAINING SUCH AUDIO CONTENT?

Yes, you need to. This is because you need a medium to showcase your audio services and the best medium for this is via your own website. Your website and its audio content would let your prospective customers know that you mean what you say in terms of audio quality.

Don’t forget to prominently state in your website that you offer audio narration services of all kinds like narrating website articles, podcasts and audiobooks. In fact, always repeat it in every page of your website just to always remind your prospective customers.

You could also create your own text articles, narrated articles, podcasts and audiobooks during the lean periods of your business. Let’s face it, unlike full-time employment where you have a regular salary, owning your own business can mean undergoing periods of little to no income.

You could also sell your own background music/audio and sound effects. You can even sell your music recordings. You could also sell foreign language audio interpretations if you can speak other languages.

Lastly, don’t also forget that Spotify, Amazon, Apple and related audio platforms also sell audio products. You could upload your narrated text articles, audiobooks and podcasts to these audio platforms to earn money.

CONCLUSION

It’s safe to say that there is a big push by digital content creators to turn their text content into narrated audio content as well. There is literally more than a billion websites of which hundreds of millions are active. Almost all of these websites still contain text only content.

If you can even persuade a small fraction of these active website owners who number in the hundreds of millions to be your customers, you can sustain a profitable audio narration business for a very long time.
